The Bible tells us how it all began . . . and how it will end. Long ago and far away in a place call heaven lived a race of beings called angels. The Bible tells us almost nothing about the kingdom they lived in, but we know that the angels were very loyal to their King, whom we know as God.
The highest-ranking created being in this kingdom was named Lucifer (Isaiah 14:12, KJV). Lucifer was called a “covering cherub”(Ezekiel 28:14), which probably means that he stood next to God.
Unfortunately, Lucifer rebelled against God. The Bible says that he was jealous of God’s position as ruler of the Universe. He wanted to sit on God’s throne and wield His power (Isaiah 14:13, 14). As a result, war broke out in heaven (Revelation 12:7). This is how evil originated.
Many people wonder why God created a devil. He didn’t. The Bible says that God made Lucifer a sinless being (Ezekiel 28:15). But He also gave him a free will, and Lucifer chose to rebel against God.
Lucifer also promoted his rebellion among the angels, and many of them sided with him against God. God could not tolerate evil in heaven, so Lucifer and his angels were thrown out of heaven (Revelation 12:9). Lucifer came to be known as “Satan” and “the devil”; he is often represented symbolically as a serpent.
